Students awarded scholarships
sponsored by NLHC
Jack Byrne, Minister Responsible for Housing, today announced the
recipients
of Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation’s (NLHC) scholarships
for 2003.
Each year, NLHC awards scholarships to high school graduates
and adults
pursuing post-secondary education. The scholarships are awarded in the
Avalon/East, Central and Western/Labrador regions to children of
clients,
children of employees and adult clients returning to school. Each
scholarship
is valued at $1000.
Commenting on the NLHC Scholarship Program, Mr. Byrne said, “I
would
like to congratulate these deserving scholarship winners, as well as
all
those who applied. Clearly, they are individuals who demonstrate a real
commitment to their academic achievement and determination to complete
a post-secondary education. I wish them well in their fields of study
and
all of their future pursuits.”
The following are winners of NLHC’s scholarships for 2003 :
Avalon/East
Danielle Barron, daughter of Jerome and Annette Barron is the
winner
of an NLHC employees’ children’s scholarship. Jerome is employed with
NLHC’s
Avalon Regional Office. Danielle, a graduate of Holy Heart of Mary High
School, is enrolled at Memorial University in St. John’s.
Jonathan Lodge, son of the late Frazer Lodge and his wife,
Donna, is
also the winner of an employees’ children’s scholarship. Frazer was
employed
in NLHC’s Information Systems Division. Jonathan is a graduate of
Gonzaga
High School and is currently a student at Memorial University in St.
John’s.
Central
Michelle Penney, winner of an NLHC adult scholarship, is
enrolled at
Keyin Technical College in Clarenville, where she is completing the
Business
Management Program.
David Ellis, son of Roland and Jacqueline Ellis, is the winner
of a
clients’ children’s scholarship. David is a graduate of Leo Burke
Academy
in Bishop’s Falls and is currently enrolled at Memorial University in
St.
John’s.
Western/Labrador
Michelle Earle, winner of an NLHC adult scholarship, is
attending the
College of the North Atlantic in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, where she is
enrolled
in the Office Administration Program.
Renee Parsons is the winner of an NLHC employees’ children’s
scholarship.
Renee is the daughter of Eric and Linda Parsons. Linda is an employee
with
NLHC’s Corner Brook Regional Office. Renee is a student at the Sir
Wilfred
Grenfell College in Corner Brook and is a graduate of Herdman
Collegiate.
Winners of the NLHC adult scholarships are selected based on
an interview
that assesses initiative, need and community experience.
NLHC’s children’s scholarships are awarded based upon the
results of
the Provincial Scholarship Exam.
