Students awarded scholarships
sponsored by NLHC
Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and
responsible
for Housing, today announced the recipients of Newfoundland and
Labrador
Housing Corporation’s (NLHC) scholarships for 2004.
Each year, NLHC awards scholarships to high school graduates
and adults
pursuing post-secondary education. The scholarships are awarded
in
the Avalon/East, Central and Western/Labrador regions to clients’
children,
employees’ children and adult clients returning to school. Each
scholarship
is valued at $1000.
Commenting on the NLHC Scholarship Program, Minister Burke
said, “I
congratulate this year’s scholarship winners and wish them well in
their
academic pursuits. They have demonstrated a clear commitment to
the
goal of attaining a post-secondary education. I’m sure that this
dedication
will serve them well in all of their future pursuits.”
The following are NLHC’s scholarship winners for 2004:
Avalon/East Region
Eleanor Duke is an NLHC adult scholarship winner. Eleanor is
completing
the Therapeutic Recreation Program at Keyin College in St.
John’s.
Jacqueline Shannahan is an NLHC adult scholarship winner.
Jacqueline
is a student at the College of the North Atlantic in St. John’s, where
she is enrolled in the Bio-medical Engineering Program.
Heather Marshall-Ryan is a clients’ children’s scholarship
winner. She
is the daughter of Sylvia Marshall and a graduate of Booth Memorial
High
School. Heather is presently attending Dalhousie University in
Halifax,
where she is completing a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Christopher Hanlon is an NLHC employees’ children’s
scholarship winner
and the son of Vince and Nora Hanlon. Nora is employed with
NLHC’s
Administrative Services Division in St. John’s. Christopher is a
graduate of Holy Spirit High School and is currently enrolled at
Memorial
University, where he is pursuing an engineering degree.
Central Region
Jade Callahan is a clients’ children’s scholarship
winner. She
is the daughter of Debbie Callahan and a graduate of Lewisporte
Collegiate.
Jade is enrolled in the Legal Administration Program at Holland College
in Prince Edward Island.
Sarah Tubrett is an employees’ children’s scholarship winner.
She is
the daughter of Denis and Leigh Tubrett. Denis is employed with
NLHC’s
Grand Falls -Windsor Regional Office. Sarah is a graduate of
Exploits
Valley High, Maple Division and is currently a student at the College
of
the North Atlantic in Grand Falls-Windsor, where she is completing the
College/University Transfer Year.
Western/Labrador Region
Sheila Hillier is an NLHC adult scholarship winner and is
enrolled in
the Bachelor of Nursing Program at the Western Regional School of
Nursing
in Corner Brook.
Nikita Small is a clients’ children’s scholarship winner. She
is the
daughter of Brenda Small and a graduate of Mary Simms All-Grade School
in Main Brook. Nikita is enrolled as a journalism student at the
College
of the North Atlantic in Stephenville.
Tonya McLean is an employees’ children’s scholarship winner
and
is the daughter of Rhoda McLean and Ken Coffey. Rhoda is employed with
NLHC’s Labrador City office. Tonya is a graduate of Menihek High School
and is presently attending Memorial University in St. John’s, where she
is completing a Bachelor of Science degree.
Winners of the NLHC adult scholarships are selected based on
an interview
that assesses initiative, need and community experience.
NLHC’s children’s scholarships are awarded based on the
results of the
Department of Education’s Scholarship Score, which is derived from a
student’s
performance on public examinations.
