Scholarships awarded to adults
pursuing post-secondary education
Three clients of the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation
(NLHC)
who are pursuing post-secondary education have been awarded
$1,000 scholarships.
Paul Shelley, Minister Responsible for Housing, today
announced the
recipients of the NLHC’s Adult
Scholarship Program for 2005. Each year, NLHC awards scholarships in
the Avalon/Eastern, Central,
and Western/Labrador regions to adults pursuing post-secondary
education.
Winners are selected
based on an interview that assesses initiative, need, and community
experience.
"I extend my sincere congratulations to this year’s
scholarship winners,"
said Minister Shelley. "We
firmly believe in the importance of post-secondary education and
recognize
that there are many
challenges faced by adults returning to school. The effort and
dedication
shown by these scholarship
winners is truly commendable."
The NLHC’s adult scholarship winners for 2005 are:
- Avalon/Eastern Region: Lori van Thiel is
completing
the second year
of the three-year Business Management Program at the
College of the North Atlantic in St. John’s.
- Central Region: Sandra P. Noseworthy is currently
enrolled in the
Therapeutic Recreation Program at Keyin Technical College in Grand
Falls-Windsor.
- Western/Labrador Region: Lisa O’Brien is in her
second
year of studies
at the Western Regional School of Nursing.
Earlier this fall, NLHC also awarded six $1,000 scholarships to NLHC
tenants’
and employees’ children,
based on students’ performance on public examinations. As well, the
Government of Newfoundland and
Labrador is emphasizing the importance of continued studies by
financing
a tuition freeze for public
post-secondary education.
