Housing Corporation to hold
14th provincial tenant conference
Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) representatives
and
tenants from the corporation’s non-profit housing are gathered this
weekend,
October 1-2, at the Albatross Hotel in Gander for their 14th annual
tenant
conference. The announcement was made today by Lloyd Matthews,
provincial
minister responsible for housing.
Commenting on the conference, Mr. Matthews noted: “This
conference
is one of our most significant events because this is what we are about
-- the people. We are in business to help families and
strengthen
neighbourhoods and communities. One of the best ways to do that
is
by gaining a better understanding of the needs and concerns of our
tenants,
and the conference provides a wonderful opportunity for discussion of
those
needs.”
More than 120 delegates representing 33 tenant associations
from across
the province are participating this year. The conference
begins
at 6:00 p.m. this evening with opening remarks and presentations by Mr.
Matthews, and Mary Marshall, Chief Operating Officer for
NLHC.
The workshops will commence on Saturday with two concurrent
sessions.
One will focus on the development of Community Centre Boards with
national best-selling author, John Fisher. He is founder of
Fisher
Associates, a consulting firm, which provides strategic planning and
management
services to organizations working in the fields of health, education,
social
assistance, arts and culture. This session will discuss
issues
such as the roles, responsibilities, financial management and effective
communications for the community centre boards.
The other session will be lead by guest speaker, Tom Brophy,
from Memorial
University of Newfoundland, who is a leader in training
volunteers.
Mr. Brophy’s workshop will allow participants to gain a better
understanding
of themselves, others and how they can more effectively interact with
the
world around them.
In conjunction with this year’s conference the Family Circle
Tenant
Association, of Bishop’s Falls, will celebrate its tenth
anniversary
and be recognized at the opening reception for its achievements over
the
past 10 years.
The conference will wrap up on Saturday evening with a banquet
and presentation
of awards.
