Another 100 Social Housing Units to be Renovated

Through a $1.3 million Provincial Government investment, 100 affordable social housing units in St. John’s will be upgraded, as part of Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation’s 2011-12 modernization and improvement program.

“There’s been a lot of renovations on our social housing portfolio over the past few years, evidence that we are moving ahead to modernize and address the social housing needs of the province for the future,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “The work on these affordable homes in St. John’s in particular further shows the Provincial Government’s commitment to ensuring that our housing portfolio is safe and of a good standard for modern living.”

The work includes the replacement of roofs, siding, windows, doors, landings and basement insulation. The following contracts have been awarded:

  • Newfoundland Roofing Ltd. has received contracts totalling $367,000 to replace the roofs on 22 units on Algerine Place, Eagle Court and Wigmore Court;
  • G.S. Hunt has been awarded a $99,000 contract to re-roof 12 units on Beothuk Street;
  • Imperial Painting has received contracts totalling $77,000 to paint the exteriors of 47 units on New Pennywell Road, Empire Avenue, Wigmore Court, Livingstone Street, Goodview Street, Gilbert Street and Cabot Street; and,
  • Johnson Holdings has received $184,000 to replace roofing on 20 units on Nascopie Crescent

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation workers will also be carrying out $580,000 in upgrades on 16 units on Wigmore Court.

The anticipated completion date for all projects is late summer to early fall 2011.

“I am delighted to see this significant investment in these social housing neighbourhoods,” said Bob Ridgley, MHA for St. John’s North. “I am proud to represent a government that consistently provides investments to improve the homes and lives of those with the greatest need.”

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador – Secure Foundations, released in August 2009, outlines a long-term vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping to create healthier communities. Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.

“This work is continuing to give new life and vitality to the downtown neighbourhood that includes Livingstone, Goodview, Gilbert and Cabot Streets,” said Tom Osborne, MHA for St. John’s South. “These upgrades will definitely contribute to neighbourhood rejuvenation and ensure that these units continue to provide affordable housing in an area where rental units are in great demand.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.

Upgrades Announced for Social Housing Units in Corner Brook

The Crestview Avenue neighbourhood in Corner Brook will be extensively revitalized through an additional $1 million in renovations and improvements, made possible by the Provincial Government. This investment is another step in Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation’s ongoing redevelopment plan of this west coast neighbourhood.

“Through Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation’s modernization and improvement program, significant inroads have been made in addressing the social housing needs of the future,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “This is particularly the case in the Crestview Avenue neighbourhood where buildings and units are receiving substantial upgrades. At the end of 2012, our government will have completed renovations on nearly half of the 24 buildings in this neighbourhood, as well as a significant number of other affordable social housing unit upgrades throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Each investment is an example of our government’s commitment to maintaining and upgrading the over 5,500 provincially-owned housing units throughout the province.”

The Provincial Government investment announced today will enable Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation to replace the windows, siding, doors and roofs in four buildings the Crestview Avenue neighbourhood, as well as undertake significant painting improvements in another seven.

“I am delighted to see this investment being made by the Provincial Government, as it will give these homes a much longer life-span and increase the comfort for the residents of Crestview Avenue,” said Vaughn Granter, MHA for Humber West. “I commend the Provincial Government and Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation on moving ahead with its redevelopment plan for this community.”

St. John’s Social Housing Neighborhood to be Revitalized

The Provincial Government, through Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, is investing $1.4 million to revitalize the Brophy Place neighbourhood of St. John’s with a series of upgrades to the neighbourhood’s affordable social housing units.

The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Len Simms, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, were joined by board members, staff and tenants of the MacMorran Community Centre to make the announcement.

“I am delighted to see this investment in this vibrant neighbourhood, which will greatly improve the homes, as well as significantly enhance the comfort for the families of Brophy Place,” said Premier Dunderdale. “It is clear, based on the volume of affordable social housing that has been upgraded over the past two years, that our government is committed to providing and improving affordable housing throughout Newfoundland and Labrador for those with the greatest need.”

The Brophy Place neighbourhood consists of 72 units contained in nine buildings that were constructed over 30 years ago. This new investment is providing major long-term upgrades, such as new siding, windows, doors and roofs needed on six buildings that had received partial upgrades, along with complete exterior replacements on the remaining three. The modernization and improvement work will also include the upgrade of electrical and heating systems, and kitchen cupboards and bathrooms.

“The work announced today represents a significant investment on behalf of our government in this neighbourhood and is yet another example of the significant effort and resources we have invested throughout Newfoundland and Labrador in maintaining and improving social housing,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “All in all, this work will ensure that these homes will be in good shape for many years to come.”

Social Housing Units to Receive Major Repairs

The Provincial Government, through Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, is investing $700,000 to upgrade and reclaim 10 affordable social housing units that have been vacant and are in need of repairs. The initiative is part of a long-term plan implemented in 2007. Once the 10 units are completed, a total of 85 of the 125 vacant units throughout the province will have been renovated for occupancy.

“These homes, six of which are in St. John’s and two each in Corner Brook and Grand Falls-Windsor, are currently uninhabitable due to interior and exterior damage”, said the Honourable Darin King, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “Needless to say I am delighted that the completion of this work will assist 10 families with affordable housing. Our government has made great strides recently in ensuring the availability of affordable housing throughout the province, and today’s announcement is evidence of our commitment for the future.”
