The Provincial Government today announced funding for 33 new affordable rental housing projects throughout the province at a total cost of $31 million. This funding will support the construction of up to 344 new affordable rental homes.
This funding includes $17 million reallocated from projects that didn’t proceed under the first round of the Affordable Rental Housing Program in 2023. An RFP was issued in Fall 2025 to find new projects for this unused funding. In addition the Provincial Government is adding another $14 million because of keen interest from committed developers, including 13 developers who successfully built homes in the first round.
This second-round of the Affordable Rental Housing Program is geared toward projects that can activate quickly and be completed within the next 18-30 months, recognizing the pressing need for affordable housing in many communities. This focus improves on the first round of the original 2023 program, which fell well short of the 900 homes promised. At this point, approximately 650 homes are anticipated from first round projects at a cost of $65 million.
The Honourable Joedy Wall, Minister of Housing, made the announcement today at the Conception Bay South Town Hall. Minister Wall was joined by the Honourable Barry Petten, Deputy Premier and MHA for Conception Bay South, Riley Balsom, MHA for Carbonear–Trinity–Bay de Verde, and His Worship Darrin Bent, Mayor of CBS. One project in CBS will receive $370,000 to construct five homes in the community. A full list of successful contractors can be found in the backgrounder below.
By increasing the budget for this program and funding projects with near-term completion in this second round, the Provincial Government is demonstrating its continued commitment to the efficient use of public funds while still creating more affordable, safe and suitable housing. This newly-focused program supports the government’s goals of 10,000 new homes over five years, reducing the number of families forced to spend 30 per cent or more on housing and helping to create affordable and independent housing for seniors.
